I am studying English hard right now to become an interpreter. And I have decided to go to an interpretation school starting next week for 6 months. So, here I am, preparing for hard lessons to come. There are many training methods for interpretation. You can compare them with muscle training at the gym. They are really hard!
By far the hardest training is called "Reproduction". Right after listening to an English sentence (sometimes a couple of sentences as your level improves.), you memorize the whole sentence and re-produce it with the exactly same words and phrases used. It is one of the hardest but also most required skills for interpretation. Without memorizing what your client says, it is impossible to make a good interpretation.
The problem is,,, I am terrible at memorizing things, such as names, numbers and faces! When I realized that reproduction skill is essential in interpretation, it almost fainted me! Having said, if this is a necessary step, I must go with the flow! So, I have done some Internet research on reproduction training method. And Here is the summary. I am determined to do these starting today!
1) Better to practice every day instead of intense training (10 minutes every day for both English and Japanese)
2) Visualize the situation by using 5W1H, rather than rote learning.
3) Never give up. Just continue practicing it when you can, or even when you cannot. After practice, review what could have done better, and apply them for tomorrow.
I will report my progress later on this blog.

That's why you said about dark chocolate here the other day. Certainly, "reproduction" is very difficult, and more difficult than "shadowing", right? For me, reproduction is so hard I can't do it even in my native language. Haha. I suppose it'd require a lot of effort to acquire the skill for all people, but your hard work will bear fruit in the near future!
ReplyDeleteYes, the mentioning of dark chocolate (along with bulk shopping of it!) is related to this "reproduction training". Receiving comments from someone like you and replying are great ways to improve my overall English skills. I thank you!
